Correcting Brassy Color
20 comments

If you've lightened your hair only a couple of shades (or not at all) with a permanent color, try a blue-toned shampoo, which is formulated especially for this problem, or have your colorist apply a blue or violet toner to counteract the redness.

For a more serious case, you can use a gentle, ashy semipermanent in a similar shade to tone it down. To prevent this from happening in the future, choose an ashy shade, use a mild shampoo and limit your hair's exposure to the sun.

If you've lightened significantly, it's possible that the bleach wasn't left on long enough -- some hair, particularly if it's naturally very dark, can be rather resistant to bleaching. Your best bet is to have a good colorist fix this problem for you. (Note: Never apply permanent color to bleached hair on your own.)

If your hair has gone an orangy yellowy color you need to leave your color on a little longer and you probably needed two boxes of color, it takes more to strip a darker hair to a lighter color. or your hairdresser can do it by using a toner on your hair, it happened to me, Start with a light shade at first then move up to a lighter shade each month you dye it.

I died my hair a fair while ago, and it ended up extremely brassy. Yet when I tried using a dark ash blonde to get the redness gone, it's gotten WORSE! Please advise me!

I am thinking about going gray. I have a reddish-dark brown color on my hair. Is there an easy way to do this without going through the yuchy growing out stage?

for vicki...hey i am a stylist and i really enjoy blondes, i also use redken, but if i were your stylist i would use a lightner/bleach and a 40 vol developer, then tone it with the redken shades eq 9t...maybe you could suggest this if you are close with your stylist. redken has a titanium line in the shades eq which are excellent for toning brassy blondes! goodluck!

For several years now whenever I get my medium brown hair colored (mostly to cover grays) it turns an orangish color after a few weeks. My roots are brown, but the rest is orange. My stylist uses Redken coloring and I use Redken shampoo/conditioner. She doesn't seem to know how to fix it and it keeps happening. I hate my hair color and am tired of spending the money. This is not the first stylist I've been to. I am 48,in menopause, does that matter and what can I do to correct this?

yvonne if you're looking to go blonde get a bleaching kit, you can get them at shopper drug mart. its called loreal paris perfect blondmissa. you just bleach your hair then you find a dye with the tone you want, so you can go to any shade of blonde or go to a light brown
