Correcting Brassy Color
43 comments

If you've lightened your hair only a couple of shades (or not at all) with a permanent color, try a blue-toned shampoo, which is formulated especially for this problem, or have your colorist apply a blue or violet toner to counteract the redness.

For a more serious case, you can use a gentle, ashy semipermanent in a similar shade to tone it down. To prevent this from happening in the future, choose an ashy shade, use a mild shampoo and limit your hair's exposure to the sun.

If you've lightened significantly, it's possible that the bleach wasn't left on long enough -- some hair, particularly if it's naturally very dark, can be rather resistant to bleaching. Your best bet is to have a good colorist fix this problem for you. (Note: Never apply permanent color to bleached hair on your own.)

I have natural dark hair but have had several red and brown dyes over it! Yesterday I had a full head of highlights as I want to go blonde I was told I would get light brown hair and next time it would lift more! It's turned a horrible orange colour and the salon toned it twice! Can I re bleach the day after to try and lift it or will my hair fall out

I tried to dye my hair blonde from and ashy blonde and it turned orange and i think it's because i didnt leave the dye in long enough. if i re dye it with an ashy blonde and leave it in for the right amount of time will it fix the orange color?

I have done this several times, i.e. get a br****color. NOW-- I used revlon blonde box for a couple of highlighted strands, and I got blonde streaks, not brassy orange color. I do not know what would happen if I tried to the entire head or touch up, but here this--it works for small sections or several strand of highlights. I promise!

ok... my hair is natural dark brown. well for the past 5-6 months i have been coloring it with a 5vr or a 6 vr... i jus love the violet purple & it looks good on me. i am a stylist, and tend to be pretty extreme
when it comes to life altogether... but anyways... bordom is not a good thing for me or my hair...long story short... with the 5vr on my hair HEAVY i went & tried to lift it with my own mix of stuff & ended up with bright orange and yellow hair & extremly pale on my scalp. so now i REALLY need to know exactly what to quick fix it cause i have a first date with an EXTREMELY handsome man plus have to open the shop in the morning.... HELP!!!!!!asap

I would like some info; used 507 Dark Natural Blonde excoverage for grey hair by Matrix Socolor as base. Used Wella Blondor mixing equal parts with 40 vol for highlights. Now underneath is orangey top is too yellow. Use Paul Mitchell flash finish icy blue/violet toner w/5 vol per. Looks like it went a little lighter. Wanted to tone that down went green UGH!

Wow! It seems like everyone is having the same issue! Brassy red orange hair! I am a cosmetologist and I first recommend trying to get most of the color you used out Malibu color corrector is excellent. After that look at your hair if you see red your hair is a level 6 or under, orange level 7, yellow orange level 8, yellows are 9 & 10. You have to get the correct level with the correct toner ie blue or voilet to get the br****out. Green is used for red, Blue is used for orange, Voilet is used for yellow. Go to a beauty supply store know for sure what the tonal color is not just ash. So if you have Med Blonde hair and you have orangey streaks a level 7Blue deposit only color with a low volume such as color touch 5vol. Do Not use a perm. color with a 20 vol!!! Good Luck!

I put a level 7 ash on top of prelightened 'orange' hair and got green. will a bleach cocktail take the green out and bring back the orange or just balance the green?
by cher schwartz from kamloops bc on March 31, 2011
