Correcting Too-Dark Color
43 comments

Don't panic: During the first week after coloring, hair usually lightens a bit, especially after a few shampoos; this is particularly true of coarse and damaged hair.

If you've used permanent color and you just can't live with it, a colorist can use a color remover to lighten your hair. (There are color removers available in drugstores, but this process is best left to the pros.) However, this should be your last resort -- you'll risk further damage and a brassy look, and you'll probably have to dye it yet again. If you've used a gentle semipermanent, just keep shampooing; eventually, most of it will come out.

To keep your hair from getting too dark when coloring at home, choose a product that's a shade or two lighter than the one you think you want, especially if you have coarse, damaged or thin hair -- these all absorb more dye than other types. A deep conditioning before you color also can help. Color builds up, too -- even semipermanents -- so when you do touch-ups, don't let the product stay on the ends of your hair too long. And always do a strand test to get the timing right.

Liane Melchert from Green Bay if you put chocolate cherry all over your greys will be lighter than the ends so your roots will be light the chocolate cherry will coat the black and that mean if you want to go lighter in the future you will have a hard time changing.

I began with a strawberry blond (my natural color is chestnut). I had it professionally colored a bright red. It is awful. After a couple of weeks, I used Loreal light reddish blond (my usual color) and it came out a very bright red and different shades in different areas. The roots are blonder and the top is red and the back almost looks like apricot. Too many colors. Its been a week. Can I try to recolor it? What if i went to a salon, would it be safe to recolor it now?

sam: Black is the hardest color to get out. You have to strip it/bleach it. Good luck!

I've been coloring my short hair w/same product every 3-4 weeks for the last year. The product was a level 3 medium golden brown which turns my salt and pepper hair a dark auburn. Years ago I colored my hair with a level 2 dark brown. I decided to try and switch back to the dark brown level two and deposited that on Monday, this is now Wednesday evening. I have washed my hair with 2 latherings each time Monday night, Tuesday am and Wednesday am and currently have fresh squeezed lemon/lime juice saturing my hair. This is a natural attempt to strip some of this BLACK!!! off all 1 1/2" of my thick hair. HELP!!!
